Kerala Houseboat Tragedy: 22 people died in Kerala tourist boat accident, ignorance of rules was the main reason for the accident
National Desk, NE Post: Twenty-two people were killed when a houseboat capsized near Thuvalathiram beach in Tanur area of Malappuram district in Kerala on Sunday evening. Seven children and some women are also included in the dead. This accident happened around seven in the evening. Around 40 to 50 people were aboard the boat at the time of the accident. Relief and rescue work is being done on the spot.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire department personnel and local administration are deployed. Underwater cameras are being used to search for the missing.
Case filed against boat owner
Those being evacuated have been taken to hospitals in Thirur, Tanur and Kozhikode. Out of which most of the people have been declared dead. A case has been registered against the owner of the boat. According to the information, this boat did not have a fitness certificate. Also, the people on the boat were not even given life jackets.
Announcement of compensation of two lakh rupees
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed deep grief over this accident. Expressing grief over the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of two lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased. PM Modi has also tweeted about this incident, he has written in his tweet - "I am hurt by the death of people in the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia amount of two lakh rupees from PMNRF will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a statement condoling the deaths and directed the Malappuram District Collector to carry out a coordinated emergency rescue operation. Fire and police units, officials of revenue and health departments and local people of Tanur and Tirur areas of the district are involved in the rescue operation, the statement said. It has also been said that ministers Abdurrahiman and Riyas will coordinate the rescue operation.
Expressing grief over the accident, Congress leader and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi wished speedy recovery of the injured.
At the same time, Kerala's Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Riyas has also expressed grief over this incident. After getting information about the incident, he said that especially children are among those who lost their lives in this accident. According to the information being received, the incident took place when the children were riding a houseboat during the school holidays. There are still reports of missing of many children, for whose search a special campaign is also being conducted.
The police who reached the spot are currently engaged in the investigation of this entire matter. People around are also being questioned to find out how the incident took place. Regarding the incident, a senior police officer said that the accident took place at around seven in the evening. Till now the people pulled out of the water were admitted to nearby private and government hospitals. Where some people are undergoing treatment. He said that the exact cause of the accident could not be ascertained at the moment. We are currently investigating the entire incident.
