Addressing reporters at the Assam Assembly premises today, Raijor Dal President and Shivsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi slammed the BJP-led government for terrorizing the people with excessive tax burden. The MLA said the government has imposed too much burden on the people who work and eat with taxes and fines. He cited personal experience that taxes and fines have increased dramatically in every area related to public life. For example, he mentioned the government's plan to increase property taxes in municipal areas. The MLA quoted Shivsagar city as saying that till last year, the municipality of Shivsagar city collected a total of Rs 4 crore annually in property tax, while this year the tax has increased to Rs 13 crore annually. He added that a person who was paying only Rs 1,000 property tax till last year has now increased it to Rs 23,0 He said property taxes have increased by 325 per cent in Shivsagar city alone. Akhil Gogoi assured that he fully supports the protests by the people of cities across Assam against such excessive tax collection. He urged the people of Assam to intensify their protest against this unfair tax increase.
