Defamation case against former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi

Digital Desk, NE Post: Assam Public Works (APW) Chairman Abhijit Sharma has filed two defamation cases against former Chief Justice and current Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi. The APW chairman has filed the defamation case alleging that some incriminating information pertaining to Abhijit Sharma was included in the Justice for the Judge of his biographical book published by the former CJI. Ranjan Gogoi, on page 173 of his autobiographical book, had earlier publicly demanded the withdrawal of the information contained against APW and Abhijit Sharma and also urged the former CJI to apologise. The book pointed to Abhijit Sharma as one of the factors why the then NRC coordinator Pratik Hazela had to be sent on deputation to Madhya Pradesh. Abhijit Sharma addressed a press conference in January and asked Ranjan Gogoi, “Am I a terrorist ? Am I a colleague of Paresh Baroua ? The APW chairman called for the withdrawal of this incriminating information or else he also announced the filing of a defamation case. Abhijit Sharma has challenged the former Chief Justice of India through two defamation cases numbered 261/2023 and 447/2023 in the Kamrup Civil Court against him for ignoring his appeal. During the hearing of the NRC case, the then NRC coordinator Pratik Hazela informed Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that the APW was obstructing his work. The Supreme Court also warned Abhijit Sharma for the allegations Later, in his autobiography published after his retirement from the post of Chief Justice, Ranjan Gogoi included some offensive information about the APW and Abhijit Sharma. Abhijit Sharma filed a defamation case of Rs one crore today over the matter.
