Lok Sabha Passes Three Criminal Law Bills Seeking to Replace IPC, CrPC & Evidence Act.
Digital Desk, NE Post: Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the three revised criminal law bills, namely, the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, proposing to replace the Indian Penal Code, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, proposing to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Sanhita, which seeks to replace the Indian Evidence Act.
The bills were passed along with certain new amendments moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Replying to the discussion, Amit Shah said that the three Criminal Bills are intended to replace the British era laws as transformative.
"The new legislation will bring big changes in the existing criminal justice system," he said.
Talking about the existing laws, the Union Home Minister said, "These are 150-years-old British era laws and the Prime Minister has decided to end the country from these colonial-era laws.
He said, existing laws only have provisions for punitive actions but the new laws have been designed keeping in view the humanitarian approach.
He added that the priorities have been given to women and children under the new laws and these laws are in consonance with the spirit of the constitution.
He further said that this is the first time when the terrorism has been clearly defined under new laws.
"Mob lynching is heinous crime and it will attract death penalty under the new laws," Shah said.
One of the amendments relate to giving exemptions to doctors in cases of death due to medical negligence.
These three criminal law bills were passed in Lok Sabha amid the suspension of 141 opposition Members of Parliament (MP) from both houses.
