Brazil to chair G20 in 2024; Prime Minister Narendra Modi hands over responsibility

Brazil will chair the G20 next year. India, which holds the presidency this time, has already handed over the gavel of the presidency to Brazil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the gavel of the G20 presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday. Brazil will take over the rotating presidency of the G20 from India on December.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Brazilian President da Silva who arrived in the country for the G-20 meeting on Saturday. Prime Minister Modi also recalled his meeting with the President of Brazil in Johannesburg during the recent BRICS Summit. The Prime Minister said in an X post that India would hand over the presidency of the G-20 to Brazil. The Prime Minister also said that he was looking forward to his views on various issues. Prime Minister Modi also held bilateral meetings with Brazilian President Lula da Silva during the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan earlier this year.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva arrived in New Delhi on Friday with his wife. He was welcomed at the airport by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityananda Roy. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Brazil enjoy a close and multifaceted relationship based on shared democratic values and convergence of views on many global issues.

The two countries cooperate not only bilaterally but also in multilateral organizations like BRICS, IBSA and G-20 and the United Nations and WTU. In 2006, India-Brazil relations were upgraded to a strategic partnership.
